British Columbia's Grey Whales

October 05, 2016 in Grey Whales, BC ocean life

It's hard to image the size of these beautiful grey whales until you see them for your self. The experience is awe inspiring.
I was lucky enough to spot several on my recent trip to Bamfield on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.  A mother and her calf made an appearance for us and I shared their joy of just being who they are.

Grey whales have the longest migratory route of any mammal on earth, covering over 9,000 kms from Alaska and the Bering Sea to Baja, California and Mexico. They do this by following the contours of the ocean bottom.

I come away from these experiences, these few moments I am fortunate enough to spend with a truly magnificent animal, with a renewed love and appreciation for the place I call home here in British Columbia.
